This month, we’re mixing up timeless favourites with innovative, flavour-packed, contemporary combinations that are sure to tantalise your taste buds and leave you ready for round 2! But before you decide what’s next on your ‘must-try list’, allow us to offer a brief look into the evolution of these delicious drinks.
Cocktails have a storied past that dates back to the early 19th century, evolving from simple mixed drinks to the sophisticated creations we enjoy today. The term “cocktail” first appeared in print in 1806, defined as a “stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters.” This era also saw the emergence of legendary American barman Jerry Thomas, who authored “The Bon Vivant’s Companion” in 1862, the first ever bartender’s guide- still influential today for its classic recipes. Thomas, a showman with a flair for publicity, is rumoured to have even inspired Tom Cruise’s character in the film Cocktail. Also interesting to note is that the concept of “happy hour,” originally coined by the US Navy in the 1920s, was a period for sailors to unwind with recreational activities, a far cry from its modern association with early evening drink specials. Over the years, cocktails have expanded into a diverse array of flavours and styles, from timeless classics like the Martini to innovative modern twists.
And for those wanting to get creative at home, feeling inspired and ready to dive into the art of cocktail creation—we’ve asked Thalitha and Ephraim, our very own Bartending team to share their top three tips for your own at home creations:
- Start with the Classics: The best way to master cocktail crafting is to begin with the classics. These timeless recipes provide a solid foundation. If you’re dreaming of a unique tequila-based creation, start by perfecting a classic margarita. For something bold and bitter, get to know the Negroni. Once you’re comfortable with these basics, you’ll find that many specialty drinks are just creative riffs on these original formulas.
- Embrace the Seasons: Seasonal ingredients can greatly enhance your cocktails. Fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices not only taste better but also align with the time of year. Think fruity and refreshing in the summer, and warming and spiced in the winter months… Seasonal ingredients not only make your drinks more enjoyable but also ensure that they’re crafted with the freshest, peak flavours.
- The Art of the Garnish: A well-chosen garnish can elevate your cocktail from good to great. Beyond adding a touch of visual appeal, garnishes can also introduce subtle flavours. Whether it’s a twist of citrus, a sprig of herb sourced from your own garden, or a touch of spice, a thoughtful garnish can transform your drink and showcase your flair behind the bar. Be sure to experiment with different garnishes and glassware to create a truly memorable cocktail experience the next time you’re entertaining at home.
So, whether you’re enjoying one of our expertly crafted cocktails at Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa this September and well into our summer months, or trying your hand at mixology at home, remember that creativity and a touch of seasonal inspiration are key to crafting delightful drinks. Cheers to the start of spring and making every sip an occasion to remember! Reserve your table now and we’ll make sure it’s shaken, not stirred.
